Achillea millefolium – western yarrow
With fern-like foliage, these white, aromatic flowers create the perfect platform for butterflies to land on. This is an extremely low-maintenance species that establishes and spreads well, one of the reasons it is found throughout North America. Western yarrow also possesses strong medicinal qualities well known to native peoples. It was used almost universally to stop bleeding, as an antiseptic, and as a topical anesthetic. Its aromatic leaves were also used in teas and smoked in pipes. It will tolerate extra water and some shade, especially if the soils are well-drained (perennial / plant fall, winter, or spring) . |
